Cilia movement of ependymal cells in the third ventricular surface is inhibited by the administration of methylmercury to mouse

چکیده
Four cerebral ventricles exist in mammals and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fills the ventricles. Hydrocephalus is induced by overproduction of CSF, defective absorption of CSF, and obstruction of flow. Ependymal cells, a type of glial cell, are simple columnar epithelium cells lining the ventricles of the brain and the ventricular surface of ependymal cells is covered with motile cilia. CSF flows in one direction as all cilia beat in the same direction. This ciliary beating of ependymal cells ensures the constant flow of CSF, playing an important role in not only the maintenance of neuronal function but also the movement of neuroblasts. In addition, it is thought that abnormal ciliary beating function is associated with the development of hydrocephalus [1-4].

Control of Ventricular Ciliary Beating by the Melanin Concentrating Hormone-Expressing Neurons of the Lateral Hypothalamus: A Functional Imaging Survey
The cyclic peptide Melanin Concentrating Hormone (MCH) is known to control a large number of brain functions in mammals such as food intake and metabolism, stress response, anxiety, sleep/wake cycle, memory, and reward. Based on neuro-anatomical and electrophysiological studies these functions were attributed to neuronal circuits expressing MCHR1, the single MCH receptor in rodents. In compleme...
متن کاملThe mouse Jhy gene regulates ependymal cell differentiation and ciliogenesis
During the first postnatal week of mouse development, radial glial cells lining the ventricles of the brain differentiate into ependymal cells, undergoing a morphological change from pseudostratified cuboidal cells to a flattened monolayer. Concomitant with this change, multiple motile cilia are generated and aligned on each nascent ependymal cell. Proper ependymal cell development is crucial t...
متن کاملAssessment of Sialic Acid Distribution in Mouse Epididymis
Previous studies have shown that epididymal epithelium and its secretions are critical for sperm maturation. These secretions contain many glycoconjugates with sialic acid terminal sugar. This terminal sugar by interveining in cellular interactions and masking surface receptors, has an important role in sperm maturation and protection. Moreover lectins have been employed as useful probes to det...
متن کاملDeletion of the Parkin co-regulated gene causes defects in ependymal ciliary motility and hydrocephalus in the quakingviable mutant mouse.
The quakingviable mouse (qkv) is a spontaneous recessive mouse mutant with a deletion of approximately 1.1 Mb in the proximal region of chromosome 17. The deletion affects the expression of three genes; quaking (Qk), Parkin-coregulated gene (Pacrg) and parkin (Park2). The resulting phenotype, which includes dysmyelination of the central nervous system and male sterility, is due to reduced expre...
متن کاملA scanning and transmission electron microscopic observation of the fourth ventricular floor in the mouse.
The floor of the fourth ventricle in the mouse was studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. 1. The fourth ventricular floor is covered by a simple layer of ependymal cells, the cytoplasm of which is characterized by numerous filaments and scanty ribosomes. 2. The ventricular surface of the ependyma is studded with numerous cilia and abundant microvilli. In the medial part of th...
